Iran’s oldest musician subject of new documentary

Iran’s oldest tambur virtuoso, Seyyed Qadamyar Hosseini, has been featured in a new documentary.

Iranian director Aref Mohammadi has made a documentary about the Iranian tambur virtuoso, who is considered Iran’s oldest musician ever to have performed onstage.

Mohammadi spent two years making the documentary, titled ‘The Song of God’.

Seyyed Qadamyar Hosseini gave a performance during the 7th Regional Music Festival at Tehran’s Vahdat Hall in May 2011, when he was 117 years old.

The festival also bestowed its lifetime achievement award to Hosseini during the event.

The talented artist was born in the western Iranian city of Kermanshah in 1894. He died in 2014.

Hosseini’s father, Seyyed Tarimorad, taught him how to play the tambur when he was a child. He increased his proficiency of the instrument while attending classes held by his elder brother, Seyyed Salman, and his uncle, Seyyed Baba Hossein.

A tambur is a fretted string instrument played in much similar fashion as a guitar.
